A 36 -year -old police officer who was the mother of a four -year -old little and veteran daughter of the Chicago Police Department was shot dead while she was on Chicago, police said.
The incident occurred at approximately 9:50 pm on Thursday night when the officers of the Chicago Police Department assigned to the sixth tactical team of the district (GRESHAM) were in patrol when they tried to conduct a investigation stop in a suspicious male in the 8200 block of S. Drexel Avenue, according to a statement from the Chicago Police Department.
The officers approached the suspect, but the individual immediately fled on foot in a nearby building, police said.
Subsequently, the police chased the suspect in the building, but faced another individual who was armed within the residence to which the suspect fled, the authorities continued.
“The armed criminal fled the residence and was arrested,” police said. “An officer suffered a gunshot wound and was taken to a hospital in the area, where he succumbed to his wounds.”
The police officer who died has not yet been appointed, but Chicago’s police superintendent Larry Snelling said she was an official 36 -year -old woman who had been in the department for four years in the 6th district and was the mother of a little daughter.
“He lost his life tragically doing the work he loved and that was one of the things his mother said, he loved his work and the way he worked, it was evident that he loved his work and wanted to make Chicago a better place,” Snelling said during a press conference. “She wanted to make it safer.”

Mayor Brandon Johnson said that the entire city is mourning for the loss of this officer.
“This young woman served honorablely. “His young and energetic bold approach to keep us safe is the memory that we will honor.”
An additional officer suffered a wrist injury and was taken to the hospital in fair conditions, police said, but no other injuries were reported.
Three firearms were located on the scene and several people were arrested, police said.
In general, between January 1 and April 30, 16 police officers in the United States have been killed for crime in the fulfillment of duty and firearms were used in 75% of these incidents, according to statistics compiled by the United States Department of Justice.
The main circumstances surrounding the deaths of the officers included activities related to responses to illegal or suspicious activities, activities and traffic stops, according to the Department of Justice.
However, the accidental deaths of the police have decreased by 68.2% when comparing the first four months of 2024 (22 deaths) with those of 2025 (7 deaths), with the main causes of accidental deaths in 2025 due to car accidents and officers attacked by a vehicle.
